About Tartrazine

Tartrazine is a water-soluble synthetic azo dye that gives a lemon-yellow colour. It is stable in light and heat and is supplied as a powder or aluminium lake.

Uses and applications

Food and beverage

Used to colour drinks, confectionery, desserts and sauces, where permitted.

Pharmaceutical

Used to colour capsules, tablets and syrups.

Cosmetics

Used in some cosmetic products where permitted.
