About Barium Sulfate
Barium Sulfate is a dense, chemically inert white mineral that is practically insoluble in water and acids. It is supplied as natural barite or as a precipitated (blanc fixe) grade.
Uses and applications
Paints, plastics and rubber
Used as an extender and filler that improves opacity, gloss, density and chemical resistance in coatings, plastics and rubber.
Oil and gas
Used as a weighting agent to increase the density of drilling fluids and control well pressure.
Building
Used in radiation-shielding concrete and in heavy mortars where high density is required.
Healthcare
Pharmaceutical grades are used as a radiopaque contrast medium for X-ray imaging of the digestive tract.
